It Gets Easier…and Other Lies Book Review

Standard

Claudine Wolk may just be my hero.

Her book, It Gets Easier…and Other Lies We Tell New Mothers, is a breath of fresh air compared to many of the standard new mom/parenting books on the market. Comprised of real truths (like how your birthing plan might go straight out the window when you feel that first contraction) and honest-to-goodness advice from someone who has been there, this book tells new moms (or those about to be new moms) what REALLY to expect when they’re expecting.

I wish someone had given me this book before I had my daughter. I can’t even tell you the number of times I thought to myself, ‘yeah, I wish I had known that before’ while reading. Claudine Wolk succeeds in getting down to the nitty gritty of stuff that isn’t covered in other parenting books (like the ice packs they give you in the hospital. By the way, they are a gift from God. Use them lots). She recounts her personal experiences and adds a dose of humor to each anecdote that makes the reader feel like she is talking to a good friend.

Clearly, Wolk wanted to make this book as reader-friendly as possible. At the end of each chapter, there is a summary section so that the reader can get a quick view of the main points Wolk wanted to stress. And at the very end of the book, there is a index for simple reference and resources to find more information on interesting baby-/parenting-related topics. With all of that, the reader can’t help but come away feeling pretty confidant about what to expect during and after childbirth.

This is a must-read for anyone who just had a baby or is currently pregnant. In fact, it would probably make a wonderful shower gift for a first-time mom.
