St. Baldricks 2013, Part Two

Standard

If you missed the first part of our St. Baldricks adventure, check it out here.

Okay, let’s get right to it:

When we left off, the team was heading to Kitty Hoynes to take part in the St. Baldricks event there. This is the view of Kitty Hoynes (on the corner) from the parking garage across the road:

Looks like a quiet, Sunday afternoon at the bar, right? Take a look at what it was like INSIDE Kitty Hoynes:

Wall-to-wall people, holy moly. You couldn’t walk one step without running into someone. It was CRAZY. The boys signed in and then we slowly made our way towards the stage (see where the people are shaving hair towards the middle of the picture?) and hung out there until it was our turn.

Props to You: Alexandra Raisman’s Parents

Standard

These are the parents of Alexandra Raisman, a gymnast on the American Olympic team, and it’s clear that they completely support their daughter 100%. The video is of them watching their daughter’s uneven bar routine the other night during the Olympics. Greg and I thought this was so adorable when we saw it. What a good example of supporting your child–Greg and I, both, want to be like that with whatever Zoey does in the future:

Sunday Props–Send Cheer Campaign

Standard

Cheerios and the USO are partnering to ‘send cheer’ to military families. Basically, anyone can buy a box of Cheerios, cut out the postcard from the inside of the box, write a message to a military family and send it off in the mail. Not only will you make someone’s day, Cheerios will donate  a dollar for every card received to the USO so that programs such as United Through Reading and Operation Phone Home get funding to continue.

Helping those that sacrifice to help us every day. For that, I saw kudos to you, Cheerios and USO.

Sunday Props–Short Fat Guy’s Road Run

Standard

I saw this on the news this morning and OMG talk about out of the ordinary. Everyone has heard about walk-a-thons and races to raise money for different charities. But I bet you’ve never heard of something quite like this. The Short Fat Guy’s Road Run is an annual tradition in which some of Syracuse’s, um, STOCKIER men raise money and walk a total of a city block–while eating snacks–in an effort to raise money for Make a Wish (which just happens to be an organization I wholeheartedly support). So. They’ve apparently been doing this ‘run’ for over twenty-five years and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization. For that reason, they deserve props.

Want to know how much money they raised this year? Over $200,000 for Make-a-Wish recipients in this area. Impressive.

Kudos to all of the participants in the, um, ‘run’.

Wednesday Props: Million Mom Challenge

Standard

If you haven’t already heard, ABC News and United Nation Foundation have teamed up to create the Million Mom Challenge–an effort to “build an at least one-million-member-strong movement of Americans committed to helping mothers and children around the world — moms here engaged with and helping moms overseas”. Why? Because they understand the Mommy Network needs to expand. We all need to help each other because every mother and baby deserve to have healthy lives together.

The following needs to change:

“Every 90 seconds, around the world, a woman dies during pregnancy or childbirth, while more than 50 million women this year alone will deliver their babies without the aid of a skilled birth attendant.

Even if mom and baby make it through delivery, 1.5 million newborns die within the first 24 hours of life, while as many as 3.3 million babies die before they turn one month old.”

Let’s change that. Take the challenge here or here.

Wednesday Props–Kailee

Standard

This week’s Wednesday Props is a super-special one. I know I will be praying for this little girl.

It has just come to my attention that a little girl named Kailee–only 14 months old, which puts her at Zoey’s age–has brain cancer. Her relative is a friend of Greg’s on Facebook and he sent me a text this morning about how they just posted about little Kailee’s fight. Because she is the same age as Zoey and because Greg said she is so adorable (I can’t look at her picture because I’m already crying), I feel the need to shout to the world how amazing this little girl must be.

I don’t know her last name. I’ve never seen her face. All I know is she’s in round 2 or 3 of 5 rounds of chemo. A 14-month old. It just shouldn’t happen. It’s just not fair.

But let’s be honest here. This is the bravest little girl in the entire world. 14 months old and she’s already putting up one hell of a fight already because she’s dealing with it. THAT’S why she deserves much more than props this week. She deserves the biggest, most amazing kudos EVER because she is a rock star as far as I’m concerned.

And, of course, so are her parents, whom I’ve never met. They’re in the trenches too–every day–and I feel for them. I really do. They all deserve our love and prayers. It doesn’t matter that you’ve never met them. Everyone in one way or another has been affected by cancer. And once again, this is a 14 month old. Say a prayer.

There is going to be a benefit soon for little Kailee. If anyone is interested in more information, including the address for the family’s website, please contact me and I’ll ask the family’s permission to post it on here.

And to Kailee and her parents: We might not know you, but we support you and our hearts and prayers are with you. God bless.
